Everyday Heroes... Our neighbors, our friends, our families
Have you ever wondered, while listening to news reports of a disaster striking somewhere in the world, what type of person responds so quickly and so unselfishly to those in need? They are your neighbors... the husband who jumps from his bed at 3 in the morning when his pager goes off with an alert of a house fire... the woman who, driving home after a long, hard day at work, does not hesitate to turn her car around and head for the firehouse when she hears the siren... Firefighters and EMTs do not just suddenly appear during major news stories. These Everyday Heroes are, quite literally, on call each and every day. Not because they have to be, but because they choose to be. They are Volunteer Emergency Responders who compassionately reach out to help their neighbors no matter what the day or the hour, knowing full well they may be putting themselves in harm's way.
In recognition of the services Ulster County's Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders provide, the Ulster County Fire Coordinator's office, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County, created the Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP). Active and lifelong volunteers receive identification cards certifying their status. Businesses are encouraged to participate by offering a discount or special benefit to emergency volunteers. In return, the merchant receives a window sticker to display at their place of business, as well as being listed on the Ulster Chamber's website. It is a win-win situation. Emergency volunteers receive a well-deserved "Thank You" discount. Businesses benefit from positive public exposure, potential new customers and - most importantly - the knowledge that they are giving a little something back to the volunteers.
